Sarah Elizabeth (Bettye) Banks Knight, formerly of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on March 12, 2021, at her residence in Woodstock, GA.
Graveside services will be held at High Springs Cemetery on March 26, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Marek Dzien of St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic Church officiating.
Bettye was born at home in High Springs, FL, to Sidney Shaw and Sadie Paul Banks. She graduated from High Springs High School and later attended college in Tallahassee.
Bettye was a fulltime homemaker and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as devoted caregiver to her husband through several health issues and to her mother during her final illness. She was an active member of Christ the King Church in Jacksonville, FL, and St. Joseph’s Church in Bryson City, NC, until her health forced her to move to Georgia to be near two of her children. She found many friends at both churches through volunteer work and involvement in various church organizations. She was a very active member of the St. Bernadette Circle of the Council of Catholic Women at Christ the King. Bettye and her husband both volunteered at the Thrift Store run by St. Joseph’s Church. She also was a member of the Garden Club of Jacksonville. Her sense of humor and friendly personality remained strong, despite several hospitalizations and eventual blindness during the past few years.
Bettye was preceded in death by her husband James E. (Jim) Knight, Jr.; her brother, James Paul Banks; her grandfather, James and grandmother, Sarah Cooke Paul; and her father, Sidney Shaw; and mother, Sadie Paul Banks.
Bettye will be deeply missed by her daughter, Sarah (Tom) Powers of Woodstock, GA; and sons James S. (Mary) Knight of Spring Hill, FL; C. Paul (Diane) Knight of Marietta, GA; and Thomas J. (Cheryl) Knight of Dresher, PA. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
